Markthal opened in 2014 in a strikingly iconic building with residences wrapped around a huge market hall with murals of fruits and vegetables. However. most stalls sell food to eat immediately although there is an Albert Heijn and Asian supermarket on site.Seemingly touristy, I arrived looking for an architectural marvel over an authentic meal. The market hall is spectacularly clean since fresh groceries are not the main offer on the main floor. I perched up the steps to a higher vantage point to get away from the crowds and scan the action beneath me. Perched in between the various foods on the ceiling are windows from the residences that wrap around the market hall, which were designed to allow residents to haul up their purchases in a basket, but are now forbidden due to environmental regulations. Higher level penthouses have windows on the floor peeking into the 40m-tall hall. There are 230 flats in total here.
