Jing'an is located northwest of the city centre. Famous for its colonial architecture and Buddhist shrines, it is also a popular base for tourists with many top-tier hotels. The Shanghai Exhibition Center was originally the Sino-Soviet Friendship Mansion. Built in 1955 and modeled after St. Petersburg's Admiralty Building with a communist red star on top, it stands on what once was a Jewish millionaire's garden.
Heading further south and away from the tourist crowds, I found leafy streets, local shops, and residents doing their daily routines.
The Moller Villa Hotel was completed in 1936 as a British merchant's home. Eric Moller was a shipping magnate and wanted to build a fairy tale castle for his daughter, who was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's works.
