Shenzhen Photo Gallery - Crane Lake Villa Part 2

Originally from the Yellow River area, the Hakka gradually migrated southwards over the centuries. The name Hakka means "guest people" to differentiate with the native locals.

The Luo clan settled here during the Qing Dynasty. 10 generations later across some 250 years, their home has become a large museum showcasing life in a walled village and Hakka culture.

Over 4500 descendants of the clan now live overseas. The Hakka are a hard-working people whose simple clothes still retain traits from the Central Plains. This group places great importance on literature and education, where scholars would be ranked at the top of the social ladder.

The Crane Lake Villa was built during Jiaqing's reign in the Qing Dynasty around 1817. Covering some 25,000 sq m, it consists of inner and outer rings with defensive watchtowers and over 300 rooms.
