Shenzhen Photo Gallery - Museum of Contemporary Art & Planning Exhibition

The Museum of Contemporary Art & Planning Exhibition occupies a prime spot in the heart of Futian. I focused on the urban planning section of the huge building. Shenzhen is a new city, conceived by Deng Xiaopeng as a symbol of economic reforms that brought China to the modern age.

The building was designed by Coop Himmelb(l)au and opened in 2016. With 7 floors, the structure rises 40m with a floor area of 80,000 square metres.

The entrance is huge and spacious with exhibitions on the city's development to the left. There is no admission charge although people use their Wechat app to book a ticket on the spot.

Historically, Shenzhen first developed as a cross-border shopping destination around Luohu where Hong Kongers cross into China. The big highlight here is a massive scale model of the city.

The city then grew in a linear axis heading west, where a new business district sprung up in Futian. This is where the city's tallest skyscraper is now located.

The city continues west around Shenzhen Bay. In the distance is the Nanshan area with more skyscrapers.

There is a new free-trade zone under construction in Qianhai along the city's western extreme, which faces the Pearl River.

Continuing upstairs, there are more exhibitions on the city's buildings and history.
