Silk Road Photo Gallery

The Silk Road refers to trading routes on land through western China, Central Asia, and into Europe, and also by sea from southern China to Europe via India and the Middle East. The term "Silk Road" was first used in the mid-19th century to refer to this trading route. Not only was silk moved across 6000km, but also religion, ideas, and knowledge.

To facilitate movement and to protect the merchants from the elements across remote western China, stopover towns were built along the route to offer protection and supplies to these ancient traders embarking on an ambitious journey to distant lands.

Trip #2 (2025)

My second trip covered a much smaller area, mostly in Ningxia but also touching upon Inner Mongolia and Gansu. While high-speed trains make travelling between cities easy, you still need car hires to reach the attractions, especially in the desert where you need a 4x4 vehicle to visit.

I initially spent 4 nights in Yinchuan to cater for multiple day trips around the area as the sights are quite scattered over a wide area.

Trip #1 (2017)

My first trip covered a vast distance from Zhangye to Urumqi, stretching over 1400km, although it only represents a small section of the Silk Road through western China. The attractions are very spread out and require long bus and train rides with further connections towards the sites, so I chose to join a tour that flew into Dunhuang and I didn't have to manage the logistics at all.
