Stockholm Photo Gallery - Kungsträdgården

Kungsträdgården has been an important place for the city since the 15th century when it was the royal kitchen's garden. Its garden was once used for royal parades and has recently been renovated. To the east are grand buildings within walking distance to the waterfront, including the opera house.

St Jakobs Kyrka on the west side of the park has been here since the 16th century, dedicated to the patron saint of wayfarers.

The Royal Theatre House opened in 1782, and the king was murdered here 10 years later. The building lasted another hundred years but became so dilapidated that it became a fire hazard. It was demolished and a new opera house was built in the neo-Renaissance style, opening in 1898.

There is no shortage of grand buildings in the immediate vicinity.

Off to the east, many ferries depart from just outside the Grand Hotel, which opened in 1874.

Heading back to the northern end of the park along Hamngatan, the Nordiska Kompaniet houses a department store. The building dates from 1915 with a signature clock at the top.
