Taichung Photo Gallery - Around the Third Market![]()
Located south of the railway tracks and away from the main tourist areas, the Third Market dates from 1922 and is still a grocery market for locals. During the Japanese colonial era, Taichung had 3 main markets, with the first one opening in 1908.I arrived first thing in the morning to experience the shopping rush hour. The market spreads out from the main building to its surrounding streets, which are covered to protect from the elements.
Just a short walk away from the market is a former brewery that has been repurposed. The Cultural Heritage Park was once the largest brewery in Taiwan. It opened in 1916 and was taken over by the Taiwan Tobacco and Wine Monopoly Bureau after World War II, and continued manufacturing until 1998. Repurposing began in 2007 with the Ministry of Culture taking over the site.
The neighbouring streets are gritty but with a lot of street-level retail and covered arcades.
