Taichung Photo Gallery - Rainbow Village

Rainbow Village is the work of Huang Yung-Fu, or "Grandpa". The veteran soldiers' village was originally slated for demolition in 2008, but Grandpa, the last remaining resident, wanted to preserve it and covered the village in art to gain the public's interest. Tourism took off around 2010, and it has since become a major tourist attraction.
When Grandpa became too frail to manage the village, the city contracted a company to operate the tourism venture, but faced accusations of destroying Grandpa's legacy by defacing his artwork due to disputes over profit-sharing and copyright.
Grandpa passed away in early 2024 at age 101. Meanwhile, the village is now surrounded by modern redeveloped tall residential buildings.
