Taichung Photo Gallery - 921 Earthquake Museum![]()
On September 21, 1999, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck central Taiwan along the Chelung-pu fault, killing over 2400 and destroying more than 8500 buildings, exposing corruption during the building boom leading up to the disaster.During Taiwan's economic boom leading to the 1990s, it was governed under an authoritarian government. Construction companies cut corners, ignored regulations, and got away with it while government inspectors looked away with a bribe. Life mattered little to them. This museum preserves the site of the collapsed Guangfu Junior High School that sat on top of the fault. There is also an indoor exhibition hall as well with an earthquake simulator. From Taichung station, take bus route 200 for about 40 minutes south to Kengkou Village (Guangfu Community). Cross the street and continue down Xinsheng Road for about 10 minutes' walk to the museum.
