Toronto Photo Gallery - Chinatown

With a history dating back to 1878, Chinatown has shifted locations throughout its history. The current location was the result of City Hall's construction, forcing the comminity to move west, finding a new home around Dundas and Spadina. The former occupants were from the Jewish community who moved away in the 1960s. As the Chinese population grew and moved northwards, the downtown location has become more a tourist attraction, as more Chinese community facilities and shops opened in North York, Scarborough, Markham, and Richmond Hill.

According to the 2021 census, Chinese accounted for almost 11% of Toronto's population, or the 2nd largest visible minority group.

Road signage in the neighourhood's streets are also bilingual.
