Just east of the Don River along Gerrard Street is an offshoot of the main Chinatown around Spadina and Dundas. This small Chinatown East dates from the 1970s when rising property prices pushed the community to Riverdale. You will find the typical mix of Chinese restaurants, small supermarkets that display their wares along the street, but its decline in recent years has been quite evident with few crowds even during the day. However, there is a unique item here that no other Chinatowns in Toronto have - an archway! The area is easily accessible from downtown by streetcar route 506 which runs along Carlton and Gerrard, connecting to College and Queen's Park subway stations on Line 1. For Line 2, take the streetcar that runs along Broadview to Broadview station. The 506 does eventually reach Main Street station on Line 2 as well, passing Little India along the way.
While there were many Chinese and Vietnamese signs along this stretch of Gerrard, there is also a Little India neighbourhood further east on the same street.
