On December 17, 2017, the 8.6km Line 1 subway extension opened to Vaughan, marking the first time the subway has crossed the Toronto city border. Of the 6 new subway stations, 2 are located in York Region, accounting for 2.4km of track. The $3.2 billion extension was funded by the federal, provincial, and municipal governments. For more information on the subway extension, visit the TTC's dedicated project website. This extension was quite controversial, as there were more pressing transit needs that wanted the funding, such as the replacement of Line 3 and a downtown relief line. While York University was a major beneficiary, the stretches in Vaughan were quite empty and had little residential density to support the line. Meanwhile, the notion of a downtown-to-suburb commute was also becoming outdated with more suburb-to-suburb commutes emerging. The extension begins at Downsview station, the former terminus of Line 1 and has since been renamed Sheppard West.
