Toronto Photo Gallery - SRT Line 3

The Scarborough RT opened in 1985 and is used by about 35,000 commuters daily. With the end of its service life coming, the government is in heavy debate as to how to replace this line, either with LRT or a subway option. In 2013, a 3-stop subway extension was initially approved, but that was changed to a 1-stop line in 2016 as costs went up, and even a 7-stop light rail line was floated. the mayor admitted in December 2020 that the line will need to close before the replacement subway extension can be built. Meanwhile, the trains had to be wrapped in vinyl to reduce paint and body work.

This line was initially designed to run streetcars along a grade-separated right of way. The provincial government stepped in to use this opportunity to test a magnetic-induction peoplemover system they have been developing. However, operating the line turned out to be a nightmare as snow could only be cleared by hand and cold weather crippled its propulsion system.

Scarborough is quite poorly connected by mass transport, with this being the only heavy rail line into the area. However, these trains are shorter and narrower than the typical subway train already.
