Taipei's National Palace Museum has an astonishing collection with many artifacts from the Forbidden City that the Nationalist government took with them when they fled to Taiwan. A southern branch opened in Chiayi's outskirts in 2015, with a more varied collection than just historic artifacts.
Getting here is quite a challenge. Far from the city centre, requiring a bus connection from the high-speed train station. Perhaps they wanted to boost tourism in this smaller city, but the location of this museum is already a deterrent from visiting.
The bus station is quite far from the museum's actual entrance with a long walk across the sprawling compound under the intense sun.
Otherwise, the building is stunning.
