Belfast Photo Gallery - Cathedral Quarter
Once the city's warehouse district to serve the linen and shipbuilding industries, the Cathedral Quarter's older buildings along its narrow streets is undergoing revitalization into a cultural district.St. Anne's Cathedral anchors the district. The cathedral we see today replaced a parish church originally consecrated in 1776 and was a gift from Lord Donegall, possibly named after his wife Anne. The Romanesque cathedral was constructed in stages, with the first part consecrated in 1904 and final completion in 1981.
Behind the cathedral is St. Anne's Square, home to many fine restaurants and the Metropolitan Arts Centre, a cultural centre opened in 2012.
The side streets do look a bit rougher around the edges with many older buildings, more unique storefronts, and plenty of street art.
