Budapest Photo Gallery - Matthias Church

Matthias Church that we see today was designed by architect Frigyes Schulek and dates from the late 19th century although there has been a church here since the 13th century. It was devastated during World War II and was restored by the Communist government afterwards.

Like Budapest's other grand churches, they charge admission for entry. You have 2 ticket types to choose from - church or the tower. I opted not to go up the tower though, since the Fisherman’s Bastion right outside already offers a commanding view of the city, I wanted another vantage point where I could see both this church and the city.

That would end up being nearby Mary Magdalene Tower, which charges significantly lower admission to climb.

I suppose with paid admission, it opens up access to areas which are not typically open. Head upstairs to the gallery where you can see the church from a different perspective. There are a few exhibits on offer but I would go for the views.
