Budapest, Hungary Photo Gallery

A pairing of 2 towns along the Danube that started in 1872, Budapest was a grand capital along with Vienna during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. There is no shortage of beautiful historic architecture amidst a picturesque setting along the river. Roman, Turkish, classic, Gothic, and Art Nouveau influences are all on offer.

I spent 3 full days exploring, with 1 day in hilly Buda and 2 days in Pest. Thanks to good weather and long summer days, I even had time to do a half day trip to the suburbs.

Pest

St. Stephen's Basilica - Panoramic Terrace

Budapest's grandest churches charge a hefty admission to enter. A ticket up the dome's viewing deck will set you back 5000 forints, or 6800 if you include the church and the treasury. But the views are really good and you get to see Buda's hills, historic castle district, and stunning Parliament all in one frame.

Andrassy Avenue

The 2.5km-long boulevard became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2002 with grand architecture on both sides. Leafy along most parts with benches to sit down, the European continent's first underground metro rumbles beneath.

Over a hundred years old, this market has beautiful architecture but save your shopping elsewhere.

City Park & Heroes' Square

Many tourists come to the park to try out its world-famous thermal baths. But there are other attractions on offer, such as a museum, castle, and a grand square that marks one end of Andrassy Avenue.

Millennium Underground Museum

Opened in 1975, this museum covers the first underground railway in continental Europe that opened in 1896. It is located along one of the original sections of the Millennium Underground which was taken out of service in 1955. 3 historic carriages are on display as well as many artifacts.

Buda

Buda Castle District (Part 3)

While destroyed during World War II, St. Stephen's Hall has been completely re-created following the plans, sketches, and photos that have survived. The Castle Museum occupies the attached building with lots of galleries to explore.

Gellert Hegy (Citadel)

A short hike up Gellert Hill's 235m-high peak is the renovated Citadel. Here, you get to see both Buda and Pest and the Danube flowing through it. It's well worth the exercise!

Buda Castle District (Part 1)

Besides the Matthias Church and Fisherman's Bastion, the Castle District's side streets have nice architecture, parks, old walls, and a quieter atmoshpere since most tourists don't venture in as they head to the other big ticket items.

Matthias Church

Like Budapest's other grand churches, they charge admission for entry. You have 2 ticket types to choose from - church or the tower. The interior is beautiful so it was worth the admission price but I saved the tower climb to another church nearby.

Fisherman's Bastion

Incredibly touristy, I first came just after sunset as the upper terrace became free to enter, and returned again the next morning to check out the day-time view. It is indeed beautiful architecture but you can also get the grand view elsewhere in the Castle District so think again if you want to pay to enter during the day.
