Budapest Photo Gallery - Gellért Hegy (Citadel)

It is possible to climb from the park across from the Elizabeth Bridge up to Gellért Hegy at 235m to reach the Citadel through a series of stairs and defined paths. Although the paths diverge everywhere, it is safe to rely on Google Maps to lead you the right way. The star of the show is a view of Buda Castle, the Danube, as well as the Pest side.

The Citadel is a relatively recent construction that started in 1850. Built by the Hapsburgs to dominate the city after the revolution, its military importance waned after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 that established the dual monarchy within the empire. The troops left for good at the end of the 19th century, but there wasn't enough money to fully demolish it.

Recently renovated, it is now a public park with a long stretch of terraces offering free panoramic views of the city. There is also a paid exhibition on offer as well.
