Millennium Underground Museum

Budapest built the first electric underground railway in continental Europe beneath Andrassy Avenue as part of its millennium celebrations. Construction took only 21 months and the line opened on May 2, 1896 with Emperor Franz Joseph taking a ride a few days later, consenting to name the railway after him.

With this historical context, it is worth a visit to their museum located next to the customer service centre at Deák Ferenc tér station. The small museum sits along a disused section of the Millennium Underground rail tunnel created when a new metro station was built here in 1955. The museum took this space in 1975.

It's only a short walk to the riverfront and there is a bus departing close by towards Buda Castle so it is easy to incorporate this stop on your itinerary.

Admission is really cheap at 1000 forints but they take cash only.

There are 3 historic vehicles on display, with a 1896 timber-frame, 1960 trailer, and 1973 metal-frame cars on the tracks.
