Cardiff's city centre sits on the east bank of the River Taff a bit inland from the Bristol Channel. If taking the train in from London, your first point of call would be here. The downtown is small but has a lot of interesting Victorian shopping arcades.
The old port is about a mile south of downtown and was once a busy place where coal was exported. Built in the 19th century and repeatedly expanded, trade peaked by 1913 but now the area has been regenerated into a leisure destination with a nice waterfront promenade.
