Dusseldorf Photo Gallery - Rhine Riverfront

The Rhine is a major trading route between the heart of the continent and the North Sea, running 1230km from today's Switzerland through Germany to Rotterdam.

The riverfront has been turned into a beautiful promenade and there is no traffic in sight. It wasn't always this way though. After World War II, the riverfront became a major traffic artery that was not appealing to pedestrians. When the new state parliament building was built in the late 1980s, it was decided the riverfront should become a promenade for the people and move the traffic underground, which was completed in 1995.

During the late afternoon, I walked the stretch from Medienhafen back to the old town, an easy trek of under 2km with the historic skyline right in front of me all the way.
