So what brought me to Dusseldorf?
It has a nice riverfront and old town but no attraction in particular stood out. Hamburg has a nicer waterfront while Berlin has a lot more history. Frankfurt has more modern architecture and Munich has Oktoberfest.
My main deciding factor was Little Tokyo. It's the closest place from London to get a good range of authentic Japanese food without flying back to Asia.
So I built a 3-night itinerary around eating well. I also threw in a few day trips to Cologne and Wuppertal. This region is a good place for a short city break.

Little Tokyo
There is a large Japanese community here of about 15,000 and the food here is authentic and delicious. The range is quite big from ramen to sashimi and I would say it's the best place in Europe for a complete Japanese experience. Besides eating, there are manga shops and even traditional gardens a bit further away from the city centre.

Carlsplatz Markt
If you didn't fill up in Little Tokyo already, head to this market for more food. There are fresh groceries as well as cooked options, all laid out in a visually appealing setting to get you spending.

Rhine Riverfront
After so much good food, I had to walk it off. There is a nice riverfront along the Rhine and I walked from the modern Medienhafen district back to the old town, which is less than 2km and very manageable.

Rheinturm
Head up to the observation deck before noon for a discounted 9 euro early bird ticket and enjoy a spectacular view of the city.

Wehrhahn Line & the U-bahn
In 2016, a new light rail extension opened with a long tunnel section beneath the city centre. The new stations each have unique artistic designs and no advertising! The rest of the U-bahn network is easy to use and clean.

Schwebebahn
Public transport enthusiasts take note. It is worth the short trip out of Dusseldorf to Wuppertal to see its suspension railway, which opened in 1901. The train line winds its way along a 13km route above busy streets and the river. It's an incredibly scenic ride and do get off at a few stations to admire the architecture and take photos.
