Edinburgh Photo Gallery - New Town
The New Town is the creation of George Drummond, who had a vision to expand the city after becoming Lord Provost in 1725. James Craig's plan was chosen in a public competition and construction started in 1767, leading up to the end of the 19th century.A huge contrast to the crowded Old Town, this part of Edinburgh had symmetrical and straight streets with squares and gardens. Running east to west are 3 parallel streets - Queen, George, and Princes.
On the western end is Charlotte Square, with its townhouses designed by Robert Adam with palace fronts, making it "the" prime address to have. The first house was completed in 1794 and the symmetry, classical facades, and gardens are a good example of Georgian urban planning.
