Edinburgh Photo Gallery - Scottish Parliament
Located at the end of the Royal Mile opposite the Palace of Holyroodhouse where a brewery once stood, this new building is a bit of a controversy. It opened in 2004 with the design representing a "flower of democracy rooted in Scottish soil". The public can visit for free after passing a security check and I was able to go inside the public gallery above the Debating Chamber. In 1707, the Acts of Union merged Scotland with England, which resulted in closing the Scottish Parliament and a Parliament of Great Britain was created in London. The roots of today's Scottish Parliament began with a referendum in 1997, when 75% voted to back a Scottish parliament. Elections were held in 1999 and the first meeting took place in May that year.
Inside, the corridors use wood generously with plenty of windows to let the light in.
Parliament was not in session when I visited so it was a huge, quiet space.
By contrast, the Main Hall downstairs is much darker with a lower ceiling that gives the impression you have entered a cave or vault. There is an exhibition here worth a quick look.
