Glasgow Photo Gallery - Tall Ship Glenlee

A 10 minute walk from Partick subway station, the Riverside Museum is well worth the trek, even though I only had a morning left in Glasgow to sightsee and this museum only opens at 10am.

Besides the various transport vehicles on display inside the Zaha Hadid building, be sure to head outside towards the river to see the tall ship Glenlee, which was launched in Glasgow in December 1896. Following its maiden votage via Cape Horn to Oregon, it continued to travel around the world carrying cargo and powered by its sails. Over its 120+ year history, its ownership changed hands a number of times, including to the Royal Spanish Navy in 1922 as a training vessel. Threatened with being scrapped, it was saved by the Clyde Maritime Trust in 1993 and restored to showcase Scottish maritime tradition, shipbuilding, and merchant trade.

While admission was free as with the Riverside Museum during my visit, that has recently changed in July 2024 when the ship reintroduced an admission fee of 4.5 pounds per adult.

Heading back inside, there are also a number of large ship models with intricate details.
