Glasgow Subway Photo Gallery

Opened in December 1896, Glasgow has the world's 3rd oldest underground metro, after London and Budapest. It was originally a cable-hauled system and was electrified in 1935. Its first modernization came in the late 1970s, when the network was closed entirely for 3 years until 1980.

Unlike the London Underground, locals call the metro "subway", similar to North American English. It runs a single circle around the city, with the different directions denoted as the inner or outer loop. New trains from Stadler started entering service in December 2023. They are the same length and size as the previous trains but with 4 cars instead of 3, which are connected to better manage passenger flows. More changes to come include half-height platform screen doors and turning fully driverless.

Famous for its short tunnels and narrow stations, some stations have additional side platforms to better manage crowds, such as Buchanan Street downtown.
