Designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa with the theme 'airport in the forest, forest in the airport', Kuala Lumpur's new airport opened in 1998, one of the first new mega airports in the region. The site was previously a palm oil plantation and after 5 years of construction, it showcased the country for the Commonwealth Games, which were being held in Malaysia for the first time. Subsequently, a 2nd terminal opened in 2014 for low-cost airlines.

The check-in area land-side is massive and there are a number of food options available. Behind it all is a long corridor to the observation deck.Air-side, you get the typical large assortment of shops selling souvenirs.

The airport is quite big so the planes are spaced out. While it is busier over at the 2nd terminal with more low-cost airline activity, you get a variety of airlines here.

Back in 2015, these plane models were put on display air-side, showing some of the latest jet visitors of the era, including Malaysia Airlines' A380, an aircraft type they've tried to dispose for quite some time unsuccessfully. China Southern has also since gotten rid of their A380s.
