Kuala Lumpur Kampung Baru Photo Gallery

Over a century old, Kampung Baru's village life and lowrises houses have survived a modern KL with the Petronas Towers looming in the background. This 4 square km village of historic buildings represents the traditional Malaysia, a place that fiercely tries to retain its way of life and keep redevelopment out.

Kampung Baru was established by the British colonial government in 1900 with a grant from the Sultan of Selangor. The objective was to provide a place for Malay farmers to live that is close enough to the city so they can supply it. Over time, the land has passed down within the Malay families to the descendants.

The government has tried to redevelop the area over the years. In 2015, their development master plan called for 1900 hotel rooms, 30 million square feet of office space, and 17,500 housing units to be built over a 20 year vision.

Street activity was subdued during the morning, but as the day progresses, lively markets arise and there are plenty of hawker stands to fill up your stomach.
