My Liverpool Travel Itinerary

Liverpool is worth at least 2 nights, and that is already quite packed and without considering the Beatles-related sights. I came primarily to look for history and architecture, and left quite amazed by the city's rich history. While it has somewhat been overshadowed by its links to slavery, they are quite upfront to talk about it, setting some context of a time when slavery brought immense wealth to the city and country. It's not a rationalization of what went on, but perhaps that transparency is needed to look for reconciliation one day.

I stayed in the city centre and was only a 10 minute walk from Lime Street station or the waterfront. The only time I needed public transport was to cross the River Mersey. Otherwise, the other sights are all walkable to each other under the good weather.

Day 1 (PM)

Arriving after lunch, I headed first to Albert Dock and walked along the River Mersey to see the Three Graces. I saved the tour up the Royal Liver Building for another day. Afterwards, I headed inland to William Brown Street and went inside the Central Library. I finished the day with dinner around Chinatown.

Day 2 (PM)

I spent the morning in Blackpool and returned at lunch time for a pre-booked tour of St. George's Hall. These tours don't take place often so I had to plan around it. After the tour, I headed to the main Cathedral and the Metropolitan Cathedral, which are off to the east of the city centre. I then explored the shops around Bold Street and the Baltic Quarter's rejuvenated warehouses.

Day 3 (full day)

I'm back on the waterfront in the morning to do the Royal Liver Building tour and the Museum of Liverpool. In the afternoon, I headed across the river to Birkenhead and New Brighton to check out the views. Both are connected by fairly frequent trains from the city centre.

What did I give up to achieve this itinerary?

I luckily had great weather for the entire trip, so I focused on enjoying the outdoors and architecture, and spent little time inside museums. I also wasn't interested in the Beatles, and did not cover any of their sights. These are the compromises I had to make on this trip :

- Tate Liverpool
- St. Luke's Bombed Out Church (closed for a beer festival)
- Red Brick Market
- Western Approaches
- World Museum
- Walker Art Gallery
- sky bars
- Crosby Beach art sculptures
