Xian's bustling Muslim quarter is just steps away from the Drum Tower and has been the community's home for centuries. The narrow streets are home to markets selling everything from noodles to souvenirs.Xian's Muslim population is estimated to be around 65,000 out of 10 million. The mosque is deep inside the Muslim Quarter. At first glance, it looks like a Chinese temple, but this Muslim place of worship dates back to the 8th century with what we see today from the more recent Ming and Qing periods. 25 yuan later, I could go in to explore on a quiet Monday morning. Perhaps China's most famous Muslim is Zheng He, an admiral who sailed to explore the "western oceans", reaching Southeast Asia, India, Sri Lanka, the Arabian Peninsula, and East Africa during the early 15th century. He died on his 7th voyage in western India in 1433.
