York Photo Gallery - The Shambles

York's historic centre has a lot of narrow streets and they've been transformed into a shopping destination for the many tourists that pass by.

The Shambles is the town's most famous street with its leaning medieval architecture. This was once the butchers' market with 26 shops in 1862. The street name comes from the Saxon word for slaughterhouse, shamel. Nowadays, you won't be able to find fresh meat for sale but plenty of other things.
