Steeped in history, York is a really good day trip from London, with trains taking about 2 hours. It's roughly mid-way to Edinburgh as well, so would also make a good pit stop on a long train journey.
York's historic town centre is not very big and can be easily explored on foot. You'll see Roman relics, medieval churches, and even modern railway history. If you plan to explore the many museums and experiences in town, budget more than a day here.
