Plans to build a Hong Kong version of the Palace Museum at the West Kowloon Cultural District surfaced in 2016. It opened in 2022 with 914 items on loan from Beijing's Palace Museum's collection of over 1.8 million works. Designed by Rocco Yim, 7-storey museum houses 9 galleries and welcomed 1.3 million visitors in its first year.
Hong Kong joins Beijing and Taipei with museums showcasing the Forbidden City's treasures.
