Yokohama is pretty much integrated into the huge Tokyo Bay urban area, home to over 30 million people. While it is often overshadowed by its much more famous neighbour, it's still worth visiting for a more serene experience with less crowds and more space. Most of the attractions shown on this page are within walking distance of each other in the city centre.
I stayed for 2 nights in early 2026 after finishing a trip to Shizuoka, lured by cheaper hotels and still good and quick access to Tokyo.
Commodore Perry landed in Tokyo Bay in 1853, forcing Japan to open a number of treaty ports for trade, including Yokohama. Foreign ideas and foods flooded in, and the city still maintains a very cosmopolitan feel today. This legacy adds a bit more unique flavour on why you should visit - see the Western community's hillside residences, savour Chinatown treats, and stroll along its manicured waterfront.
